Peniche is one of the country’s most active municipalities where fishing and canning are concerned. Living up to this ranking, the city council, in collaboration with the National Association of Manufacturers of Canned Fish and the Culinary Arts Center will promote the exhibition “Vintage Cans + The Largest Crochet and Knitted Sardine in the World” running from the 18th of October to the 1st of November at the MH Hotel Peniche..

The exhibition will be inaugurated on the 18th of October at 5:00 p.m.
The organization of this exhibition intentionally coincides with the 10th round of the WCT 2015 - Peniche Surf Championship, in order to promote our fishing and canning activities worldwide, taking advantage of the presence of dozens of journalists from all over the world.
Portuguese cans of various brands and iconic companies, belonging to Maria Proença which have been temporarily loaned by the Culinary Arts Center in Lisbon, will be on display. “I started this collection in 1972 when I arrived in Lisbon. When I started I never imagined it would become a ‘collection’ because I just bought the cans to eat the contents and throw the can away”, states the collector, Carole Garton.
"The World's Largest Sardine" a three-dimensional representation filled with vivacious coloured squares of crochet, yarn and bobbin lace will also be on display. This sardine, Ambassador of Portuguese culture and symbol of an active community, is a candidate for the Guinness World of Records.
