Quebrado beach
UMA MURALHA QUEBRADA PELO TERRAMOTO DE 1755
A Praça Militar de Peniche incluía uma cortina defensiva, que foi construída entre 1659 e 1671, aproveitando o braço de mar existente, a nascente. Integra vários baluartes e meio-baluartes, que atravessam os terrenos da antiga ilha "de mar a mar".
A extremidade norte desta frente abaluartada era rematada por um pano de muralha que ligava o Baluarte de N.ª Sr.ª da Conceição (Gamboa) ao Forte de N.ª Sr.ª da Luz, na Papoa.
O terramoto de 1 de novembro de 1755 e o maremoto que se lhe seguiu levou à destruição deste troço de muralha, passando esta zona a ser conhecida como "Quebrado", daí resultando a designação atual: praia do Quebrado.
Na maré vazia, ainda é possível identificar, nesta praia, vestígios dos alicerces do antigo pano de muralha.
A este local confluía igualmente o Entricheiramento da Linha dos Moinhos, estrutura defensiva que deve o seu nome aos vários moinhos existentes nestas terras de cereais e que ligava o porto da Areia Norte à praia do Quebrado.
A praia do Quebrado é porto de abrigo de embarcações de pesca artesanal e, junto dela, existia também um estaleiro de construção naval.
A WALL DESTROYED BY THE EARTHQUAKE OF 1755Praça Militar of Peniche consists of defensive curtain wall that was built between 1659 and 1671, taking advantage of the existent sea stretch. It includes various bulwarks and half bulwarks that cross the land of the old island from one end to the other.At the northern point of this bastioned wall there is a part of a stone wall that connected Bulwark of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Gamboa) to Nossa Senhora da Luz Fort in Papoa.The earthquake of November 1st, 1755, and tsunami that followed it, destroyed the part of this wall. That’s why this area was named "Quebrado" ("Broken") which gave origin to Quebrado Beach.On low tide it is still possible to see here the traces of the foundation of this part of the old wall.This place also brings together Entricheiramento da Linha dos Moinhos, a defensive structure, the name of which comes from various windmills existent in this area. It connected Areia Norte Port to Quebrado Beach.Quebrado beach is a safe haven for small-scale fishing boats. Next to it there was also a shipyard.
