GEOLOGIA
GEOLOGYSouth of the N.ª Sr.ª da Consolação Fort, at sea level, we can observe an extensive dark limestone layer, dipping and fractured, resembling a "chocolate bar".The Earth’s forces shaped this entire region, breaking several layers and created a geological fault, seen by the unevenness caused in the rock wall (Fig. 1). These forces also broke this layer into square shapes. Over time, the seawater has dissolved this limestone, accentuating these fractures and shaping the current “chocolate bar” appearance (Fig. 2).-

BIOLOGIA
BIOLOGYSeveral organisms that inhabit to the south of the Fort of N.ª Sr.ª da Consolação are attached to the rocks. The beadlet anemone (Actinia equina, Fig. 3) is a red anemone that feeds on particles in the water. Also attached to the rocks is the Fucus guiryi, a brown alga typical of the North-east Atlantic coast.Often walking on these rocks, we can observe the ruddy turnstone (Arenaria interpres, Fig. 4), a small bird that feeds mainly on small invertebrates.-

CULTURA
CULTUREThe Consolação slab is famous for its healing properties, due to the large amount of iodine present in these waters. This fact attracts hundreds of people, who seek to rest and physical recovery from various rheumatic, bone, and skin illnesses (Fig. 5).The iodine comes from the algae found in this region. More than 50 species are known, the majority are "red algae". The gray clays from the cliffs and puddles, enriched with sea water, are applied on the skin, contributing to health and well-being.- Fig. 5
